Heirloom knitwear holds a special place in every baby’s wardrobe. Whether it is a cozy buttoned cardigan, a chunky knit beanie, or matching knitted booties, knit garments require gentle care to preserve their plush texture and shape.
Here are our master care tips from the HS Kids studio on washing, drying, and storing baby knitwear so it stays as soft as the day you unboxed it.
1. Hand Wash or Use a Gentle Wool/Delicates Cycle
Fibers like combed cotton knit and soft wool blends can stretch or snag if agitated roughly:
- Fill a clean basin with lukewarm or cool water (never hot, which shrinks natural fibers).
- Use a hypoallergenic, plant-based baby detergent free of enzymes, optical brighteners, and fragrances.
- Submerge the knitwear and gently press soapy water through the fabric for 2-3 minutes. Avoid wringing or twisting.
2. Never Wring: The Towel Roll Trick
Wringing wet knitwear pulls stitches out of alignment and causes misshapen sleeves. Instead:
- Gently press excess water against the side of the sink.
- Lay a clean, dry bath towel flat and place the knit garment on top.
- Roll the towel up like a jelly roll and press firmly with your hands. The towel will absorb up to 80% of the moisture safely!
“Never hang wet knitwear on a hanger. The weight of water will stretch the neckline and pull the shoulders out of proportion.”
3. Dry Flat in the Shade
Reshape the garment while damp, straightening the plackets and cuffs. Lay it flat on a drying rack or dry towel away from direct, harsh sunlight and radiators. Natural air circulation allows fibers to spring back to their original loft.
4. Storing Heirloom Knits
Fold knit cardigans and rompers neatly in breathable cotton bags or lined drawers. Avoid wire hangers, which create unsightly shoulder bumps. Adding a pouch of natural dried lavender keeps baby clothes fresh and naturally repels moths.
